If your yard stays soggy, water collects against the foundation, or the basement gets damp after every storm, you don’t automatically need a French drain, you need the right fix for whatever is actually causing the water. A lot of homeowners call every drainage solution a “French drain,” but the real answer might be a buried downspout line, a sump pump discharge line routed away from the house, regrading a low spot, or a combination of those.

French Drains
A French drain is a perforated pipe set in a gravel-filled trench that collects water and carries it away from the wet area. It’s the right call for some yards, around foundations, low spots, and wet basements, but it’s one tool, not the only one.
Underground Downspout Drainage
When gutters dump roof water right next to the house, it ends up in the same low spots and against the foundation. We bury solid downspout lines underground and carry that water out to a safe discharge point, so it’s not pooling by the house or washing out your landscaping.
Sump Pump Discharge Lines
A sump pump only helps if the water it pumps out doesn’t run straight back toward the house. We install underground sump pump discharge lines that carry water well away from the foundation and release it where it won’t create a new wet spot.
Grading & Low-Spot Correction
Sometimes the fix is simpler than a drain. Regrading a low area or correcting the slope near the house can move water where it belongs without piping it. We’ll tell you when that’s the smarter, cheaper option.
